Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. The original goal of Perl had been to make report processing easier. Since that time, Perl has changed a lot and has become one of the most popular scripting languages.

Perl - The Swiss Army Knife

Perl has inherited features from many other programming languages including Lisp, C, shell scripting, AWK, and sed. The language is famous for its powerful text processing facilities. Perl is widely used in system administration, network programming, and in combination with databases and CGI programming on the Web. Perl received its nickname "the Swiss Army chainsaw of programming languages" due to its flexibility and adaptability.

  • QA Automation using Perl

    Perl has been used for years in QA for various tasks such as preparing configuration files before the test runs and parsing log files after the tests. In the past few years a lot of extensions have been added to Perl. Now, in addition to the above tasks Perl can now be used in all parts of the automatic test environment. It can be used to behave like a regular user, move the mouse and click on buttons on any application running on Microsoft Windows or turn into a web client and test any web based application.
